How to Hire a Freelance App Developer in India: A Checklist for Clients Worldwide
To choose a freelance app developer in India, check shipped products, the developer’s role and a written first-release scope. I recommend agreeing ownership, acceptance tests, payment milestones and support before work starts. This checklist helps international buyers compare providers; my own project enquiries and reviews use email and WhatsApp without calls.

Why businesses hire freelance developers from India
Compare developers using relevant shipped work and a written scope, rather than assuming a country guarantees lower cost or better delivery. I am based in Noida, India, and accept freelance project contracts. Ask each provider to explain their role in the portfolio projects closest to your requirements.
1. Check shipped work, not just a portfolio
Screenshots are easy to fake. Ask for proof that the developer has taken something from idea to production:
- Live apps on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store that you can download yourself.
- Public GitHub repositories with real commit history, not a single upload.
- Case studies that explain the problem, architecture and trade-offs, not just the final UI.
- A reference from a past client or employer if the project is large.
2. Run a short paid discovery, not a free test
Instead of a speculative coding test, pay for a one- or two-week discovery phase: user flows, database schema, a clickable prototype and a fixed quote for the build. You learn how the developer thinks and communicates, and you own a useful spec even if you do not continue.
3. Put IP, NDA and code ownership in writing
- Sign an NDA before sharing sensitive details.
- Use a work-for-hire / IP assignment clause so all code, designs and content belong to you on payment.
- Host the code in your own GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket organisation from day one.
- Create cloud, app-store and domain accounts in your company’s name, and add the developer as a collaborator.
Agree on written communication and review deadlines
I handle enquiries and project updates through email and WhatsApp, with no phone or video calls required. Agree who reviews the staging release, how decisions are recorded and a named time zone for approval deadlines. Written acceptance checks make milestone approval explicit.
5. Structure payments around milestones
Agree currency, payment method and milestones in the proposal. Each milestone should have an observable deliverable and acceptance checks. Third-party services and ongoing support need separate ownership and cost responsibilities.
Red flags to watch for
- A quote given before understanding your users and features.
- Refusing to work in your repository or to hand over credentials.
- No live apps or verifiable work.
- Vague timelines with no milestones or demos.
- “Yes” to every feature without discussing trade-offs.
The bottom line
Hiring a freelance developer in India can give you senior-level output at a sustainable cost, as long as you vet for shipped work, protect your IP, plan the time-zone overlap and pay against milestones. If you would like to run this checklist on me, start with a free written scope review.
Compare the decisions before requesting a quote
| Decision | What to define | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance project | One accountable developer and agreed scope | Check skills, capacity and handover |
| Agency delivery | Team responsibilities and specialist roles | Check who actually delivers and reviews |
| Existing product maintenance | Defined fixes or feature work | Provide access and reproduction details |
